I’m a little (lot) late following up on sales numbers again, so here’s a catch-up for Sonic the Hedgehog issues #45–#47 and Imposter Syndrome #1, which released between October and December 2021. These three months not only opened and closed Evan Stanley’s Trial by Fire arc but also jumpstarted Ian Flynn’s four-part Imposter Syndrome miniseries.
This miniseries will be releasing every other month in place of the main book to space out its numbering and time the big issue #50 for a release in June, presumably to set the landmark issue for touchdown in June 2022, which will be the 31st anniversary of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive back in June 23 of 1991.
Okay, so that’s a bit of a mouthful. Suffice it to say that the last few months of 2021 were notable not only for bookending a story but also for setting up a new one that’s poised to lead into an even more notable anniversary issue in mid 2022. All that future stuff aside, though, let’s take a look back at sales for the end of the year and see how things went.

So, not much change in terms of sales for the main book over the final quarter of 2021. Issue #45, which opened Evan Stanley’s Trial by Fire arc on October 13th sold approximately 11,013 copies according to Comichron, up from 10,963 copies sold of the previous issue which closed out Ian Flynn’s four-part Zeti Hunt arc. Issue #46, which released the same month on the 27th, fell slightly to 10,998 copies sold, and #47, which skipped November to release on December 22nd, continued this slight downward trend to 10,676 copies sold.
What about December, you ask? That’s when the first issue of Ian Flynn’s Imposter Syndrome miniseries released, as it will continue to release every other month until it ends at issue #4, filling in the gaps for the man book, which will also be releasing every other month until issue #50, as noted above.

This first issue of Imposter Syndrome released on November 17th with 12,338 copies sold, outselling all issues for the main series since issue #9, which released back on September 19th of 2018, selling sold 12,685 copies, but not quite rising to the insane 13,750 copies sold for the first issue of Bad Guys, the preceding miniseries, which released on October 7th of 2020.
All in all, the last quarter of 2021 was a good few months for IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comics, but for the curious, I’ll go ahead and stack it up in the grander scheme of Sonic comics as a whole, historically.

And I guess that about wraps things up for this post as well as for 2021 in general, at least as it pertains to Sonic the Hedgehog comics. If you have any thoughts or questions about the sales figures or about the comics in general, feel free to leave a comment below and let me know what you think!
